Fidel is a staff member here at YWAM Rwanda and a wonderful friend. He has been so welcoming to us and we are so blessed to know him! He answers our endless questions about Rwanda, helps us get around and teaches new Kinyarwandan words everyday. It has been such a joy getting to know Fidel.
“Hello! Muraho! My name is Fidel Harelimana and I work with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in Kigali, Rwanda. YWAM is an international, interdenominational movement of Christians. YWAM’s motto is “To know God and make him known”, they do this through all sorts of mercy ministries, missionary training schools, humanitarian relief projects and outreaches. YWAM Kigali Rwanda works with young people to get them involved in missions. They do this through having a Discipleship Training School (DTS) twice a year. They also have a primary school on the base that serves vulnerable children in the area. They have several other ministries focusing on vulnerable children in the area. I serve the YWAM base through maintenance and general upkeep.
I was born in Kigali Rwanda and grew up in Nyarambo. I grew up as an orphan. Life was hard for me as a child. Because of these difficulties, I have a passion to serve young people in similar situations. I thought I could help children struggling to grow up.
I came to Christ and began healing when I was an adult. I came to do DTS here at the Kigali base in 2005. During my DTS, God continued healing my heart from my childhood and from the genocide of 1994. He began showing me how I could use my skills and passions to serve him. Youth With a Mission helped me to find myself, who I am and who God created me to be.
I have been working with YWAM ever since. I have been involved in several ministries in Rwanda during this time. I also spent time serving YWAM in England after completing their Documentary Filmmaking School. I staffed there and worked in their film department. We created a film about vulnerable children and orphans living in Uganda to raise awareness about this issue facing Uganda. I returned to Rwanda last year and since then I have been serving the base here through maintenance.”
