How to find cheap flights and airline tickets

Flights and airfare are usually the biggest expense when traveling, but there are several ways you can find a cheap flight!

Fly on unpopular travel days

The cheapest days to fly are unpopular travel days. The most unpopular days to travel are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Try to book your flight for one of these days. On the flispside, the most popular days to fly are Fridays and Sundays. Avoid flying on these days as they will be more expensive.

Buy airfare during unpopular shopping times

Data shows that the best time to book a flight in the U.S. is on Tuesday at 3:00pm Eastern time. This is an unpopular time to by airfare, so airlines offer deals at this time. Another thing to think about is how far ahead of time you should buy your ticket before your travel date. For flights within the U.S the best timeframe to buy your ticket is between 3 months and 30 days before your trip. Any sooner and prices start to rise. The best time to buy an international ticket is between 5 1/2 months and 1 1/2 months before your trip. Another thing to consider is peak travel times, if you travel during the tourist “off season” you will be able to find a much cheaper flight.

Fly out of big airports

Bigger airports always offer cheaper flights.

Use Airfare search engines

These sites search for the cheapest flights across several airlines at once, often finding the best deal. This is a great place to start and compare.

Jet Radar

Fare Compare

Skyscanner

Flight Hub

Kayak

Be flexible

You pay more for a convenient flight with no connections. Generally, the flight with a longer overall travel time with lots of connections will be cheaper. Also, flights leaving at inconvenient times will be cheaper. Long layovers make cheaper flights. Spending the night in the airport, or hours at an airport Starbucks can save you money a lot of money in the end.

Sign up for a mailing list

There are awesome offers that sometimes only last for a short 24 hours, you could miss out on these deals without getting an email notification. Airfare WatchDog and The Flight Deal have great mailing lists that you can personalize for your destination.

Just remember to shop around and don’t buy the first ticket that you find!
